Proposals submitted for presentation at The ABPsi 42nd Annual International Convention should be related to the conference theme: "Serudj ta: Transformative approaches toward repairing, restoring, and renewing the Afrikan Spirit through fulfilling the mission of The ABPsi" The physical, mental and spiritual well being of people of African ancestry will be the focus of the convention.

The workshops, think tanks, papers, symposia and poster sessions should address issues related to the methods, techniques and practices used to address the health and well being of members of our community over the past 41 years and projections for the future.

 The 6th ABPsi International Congress on Licensure, Certification and Proficiency in African-Centered/Black Psychology will further The ABPsi initiative to make The ABPsi a certifying agency for counselors, therapist, service providers and practitioners who render service in the Black/African communities throughout the world. There will be presentations that address teaching, research, and theory within an African-Centered/Black Psychology paradigm. Participants may earn credits towards the LCPP throughout the convention.

 

Submission Packets MUST be complete and include the following:       

  • The Abstract Cover Sheet;
  • A 50 word abstract to be included in the Souvenir Program Book--include title, name(s) & affiliation(s) of all presenters;
  • A detailed synopsis with the title and type of presentation, limited to 2-3 typed pages.  This will be used for the anonymous review. Please Do Not include presenter’s name{s};
  • For all Symposia, Think Tanks and Professional Development workshops, please include a two {1-2}page vitae for each presenter and a time outline or breakdown 
  • For LCPP CONSIDERATION please include a two (2) page vitae for each presenter and a timed outline.

Tracks

Presentations will be organized in the following tracks: Research, Clinical Practice, Professional Skill Development, Personal Development/Self-Care, School/Educational, Industrial/ Organizational.

Submitters of Professional Development Workshops, Symposia or Think Tanks of 1 1/2 hours or longer are encouraged to complete and submit the MCEP/CEU packet. 

 

Criteria for MCEP/ CEU presentation:

  • Course syllabus material must show how the course pertains to the theory, practice, methodology, or research of the professional practice of psychology at a post-licensure level, and how the material will make the consumer of psychological services the direct beneficiary of the course.
  • Course outline - including:  (1) description of content, clearly outlining the advanced topics covered; (2) course goals and objectives as they apply to the delivery of psychological care; and (3) timed outline for presentation two hours or more, including time devoted to each topic covered. For sessions longer than 2 hours, time will be allocated for break(s). 
  • Time outline for presentation two hours or more, including time devoted to each topic covered.
  • Description of content, clearly outlining the advanced topics covered.
  • Course goals and objectives, as they apply to the delivery of psychological care
  • Instructor Vitae – 2 PAGE CV must be submitted for each instructor teaching a significant portion of the course. The CV must show the instructor’s education and/or experience with the topic covered, as well as their prior post-doctoral teaching experience, specialized training, recognition from professional groups, and/or publications on the topic covered. 
  • For sessions longer than 2 hours, time will be allocated for break(s).

 

Presentation Descriptions:

 

 

Professional Development Workshops impart skill and knowledge for integration into clinical practice. These workshops are scheduled for one and one half hour (1 1/2), two (2), three (3) or four (4) hours, including a question and answer period, completion of pre and post questionnaires, and scheduled breaks when appropriate.

 

Symposia are formatted to allow the interchange and/or discussion of ideas relevant to the convention theme (Not paper-reading sessions). These sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes including questions and pre and post questionnaires.

 

Think Tanks focus on critical issues of relevance to psychologists and involve an exchange of ideas between participants and presenter(s). These sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes including questions and answers and completion of pre and post questionnaires.

 

Paper sessions focus on the author’s contribution to clinical practice, research and/or theory as developed for formal presentation.  The paper session is scheduled for forty five (45) minutes including questions.  Note: Papers on similar topics may be grouped together by the program committee in which case the sessions may or may not be extended.

 

Poster sessions focus on the presentation of the author’s contribution to research and/or theory through illustrative materials displayed on posters. The presenter provides all needed materials and remains with his/her poster during specific times of the convention so that viewers may have the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas.  

 

Workshops, think tanks and symposia proposals that contribute to the clinical practice of licensed psychologists and other mental health professionals’ ability to improve client well being are eligible for submission for Mandatory Continuing Education for Psychologists (MCEP) and Continuing Education Units (CEU).  The ABPsi, Education & Training Committee together with the conference Program Committee will determine MCEP/CEU eligibility and forward all necessary documents to the appropriate State Board(s) of Psychology for their approval.  To have proposal considered for MCEU or CEU’s, the Workshop and CEU Proposal Worksheet must be completed and returned with the packet.

  • Abstract Proposal Packet - Please submit the abstract proposal packet at www.abpsi.org. You can prepare the materials offline and then go online to submit your completed package. NOTE THAT ALL SUBMISSION PACKETS MUST BE SENT ELECTRONICALLY NO LATER THAN 5:00 PM (EST) ON March 30, 2010. THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSIONS OR EXCEPTIONS.
  • INCOMPLETE PACKETS AND THOSE RECEIVED AFTER THE DEADLINE WILL NOT BE CONSIDEREDFOR REVIEW.
  • Proposals will be reviewed by The ABPsi National Convention Planning Committee. Acceptance will be determined by the Program Committee based on reviewers’ recommendations and program needs. Authors will be notified in writing if accepted to serve as a presenter. All committee decisions are final.
  • Acceptance/Rejection notifications - will be emailed by 5: 00 PM (EST) on April 30, 2010. 

By submitting an abstract for The ABPsi convention, the presenter(s) agrees that, if the abstract is accepted, the presentation would be consistent with the ethical principles of The ABPsi and conducted in a professional manner.  The views expressed in the presentation are those of the presenter(s) and do not represent the opinions of The ABPsi and are not endorsed by The ABPsi.

  • IT IS DESIRED THAT THE LEAD PRESENTER BE A MEMBER OF THE ABPSI.
  • ALL PRESENTERS (LEAD AND CO-PRESENTERS) MUST REGISTER FOR THE ABPSI CONVENTION.
  • Presenters must register by May 30 to ensure participation in the convention. Failure to meet this deadline will result in your presentation being dropped from the program.
  • PLEASE WEAR YOUR CONVENTION BADGE FOR ADMISSION TO ALL CONVENTION ACTIVITIES.
